The Project:
We have two artist residency opportunities (2x£4000 fees) to work as part of the first phase to the recently funded Arts Council England project in conjunction with Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery titled ‘Kick Down the Barriers’. The project has emerged following both the 2016 ‘Casey Review Report’ and the 2018 BBC Panorama programme that labelled Blackburn as one of the most segregated towns in Britain.
The project will select artists and writers/researchers to work in areas of Blackburn that have been identified as “segregated,” in order to interrogate and challenge the stigmas and barriers that the areas face. All the artwork and research developed through the residencies will feed into a long-term strategy reimaging how the Museum can incorporate and celebrate the new work within its collections.
The artist will have a strong social element to their practice, but we are interested in a wide range of practices, approaches and styles to this open brief. The residency will be across 4 months, with a sharing event/exhibition at the end of this period.
Residencies are loosely based within each of the following areas:
Ewood Park and Mill Hill
Audley Range
Bank Top
Whalley Range
Please highlight if you have a particular interest in working with one of these areas specifically.
A further two residency opportunities will be advertised in December.
