HOWLING ROUGHS

Jamie Holman has begun working with curators Caroline Wilkinson and Anthea Purkis to start re-imagining the Cotton Town Gallery, exploring the potential to introduce wider narratives that have previously lacked visibility. The first outcome of this new curatorial research is a video installation that places the looms themselves as key objects in the formations of new cultures that range from the early cinema of Mitchell and Kenyon, to those same workers caught forever on film, forming the football league and their great grandchildren filling the terraces in the decades that followed.

Jamie’s found footage edit of YouTube clips of crowds of mill workers and football fans is projected directly into the gallery, locating the space itself as art work. The video is accompanied by a spoken word poem set to original electronic music by Alan Outram, that refers to the punch card of Jacquard looms and the punch cards of the Emulator ll keyboard beloved of New Order – first commissioned by The British Textile Biennial in 2019.
