The museum is located on the corner of Richmond Terrace and Museum Street.

Blackburn can be reached by the M65 via the M6 or M61. If you are travelling from Preston, Blackburn can be reached on the A677, from Bolton on the A666 and from Chorley on the A674.


Public Transport

Blackburn Museum is approx a 10 minute walk from Blackburn bus and railway stations. Contact Blackburn Visitor Centre for details of public transport 01254 688040.

Parking

There are pay and display bays around the town centre and above the Mall shopping centre. Short-stay (1 hour) pay and display spaces are located on Richmond Terrace and Museum Street.


Group Visits

The museum is happy to accommodate group visits. These can either be self-led, as part of a school group visit or as a guided tour. A guided tour lasts approximately one hour and can include tea/coffee for a fee. For guided tour charges or further information on any of these options please contact the museum.

Accessibility


•  An accessible toilet is available on our ground floor.
•  Our entrance is located on Museum Street, there is a ramp on entrance with handrails.
•  There is a lift to the first floor, and a platform lift to the second floor.
•  If you need any assistance when arriving, please contact our Visitor Team on 01254 667130 who are happy to help.
•  We have one manual wheelchair onsite which is available for you to borrow upon your arrival.
•  Baby changing facilities are located in our family toilets on the ground floor.
•  Ear defenders can be borrowed from one of our visitor handling boxes located on the ground floor. Please ask our Visitor Services team for more information.
•  We have benches and seating available in most galleries.

Our Galleries

Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery opened on 11th June 1874 as the Blackburn Free Library and Museum. The museum now occupies the entire building and collections include British 19th and 20th century fine art; the R E Hart Collection of early books and coins; the Thomas Boys Lewis collection of Japanese prints; Greek and Russian Icons; Egyptology as well as the borough’s local history and industrial history collections, including the Lewis Textile Collection which was formerly housed at the Lewis Textile Museum.
