THE SECRET LIFE OF STUFF

Museums are full of ‘stuff’. But many of our collections were once people’s possessions. Made to be used every day; to be touched, operated, studied, or admired.

Belongings that were cherished for generations, worn out and repaired so they could be loved that little bit longer. Items, once so important, abandoned or repurposed as the world changed and moved forward. Or things that were so useful and well-made they just kept going and going and going…

Now in the care of a museum, these objects change again and start a different life. Shown in display cases and hung on walls; stored away in boxes and handled with care. Sometimes conserved, but always showing the signs of the lives they lived.

In this exhibition, we want to share the stories of some of our objects and the times they’ve had. What’s in store for them next?

Alongside this exhibition, the museum is hosting a series of events:

  • James Bloomfield: 24th October, 12–4pm
